Inside Claude Code: Building for the Model, Not the Moment
Narration: WOW Mentor
WOW Mentor breaks down the strategy of Boris Cherny, the engineer who turned a terminal chat app nobody asked for into Claude Code and, with it, rewrote how developers work. He built the whole product on three principles — build for the model six months out rather than today's, never bet against the model, and chase latent demand — resting the entire thing on accident and iteration. Keep scaffolding minimal, rules short, and judgment humble, he argues, and simply trace the exponential toward a world where coding becomes a solved problem for everyone.
Show notes
Stop grading your product against today's model. Assume a smarter model in six months, find the frontier where the current model is weak, and bet there.
Before designing a new feature, observe what users already do. Never try to create a new behavior; make an existing behavior easier.
Weigh every piece of 'scaffolding' that buys a 10 to 20 percent gain against simply waiting for the next model to do it for free, and treat scaffolding as disposable.
When a config or rules file gets bloated, delete rather than refine. Wipe it, add back the minimum only when the model drifts, and shrink the rules as the model improves.
When the model makes a mistake, don't just catch it — capture it as a reusable rule or skill. But aim rules at unexplained habits, not at people.
In hiring and reviews, ask 'when were you wrong?' Value whether someone owns a mistake and learns from it above raw coding skill.
For hard problems, don't hand it to one agent. Spawn several sub-agents with uncorrelated context windows in parallel, scaling to three, five, or ten by difficulty.
A tool the builder doesn't love is a failure even if it's useful. Fire off twenty prototypes a day until one simply feels good, then ship that.
