Airbnb's first 1,000: founders with a camera in New York
Founders shooting listing photos themselves, the Craigslist cross-post, and what 'do things that don't scale' actually looked like as daily work.
By the metrics, Airbnb in 2009 was a dying company. There were listings β in New York, in San Francisco. Nothing booked. They launched three times and three times it was silent. The story is famous now; at the time it was just failure. The data showed nothing. Traffic arrived and did not convert.
So the founders did not dig deeper into analytics. They got on a plane. They went to New York and visited hosts one at a time, with a borrowed camera. The listing photos were the problem. A dark phone snapshot next to a hotel photo has an obvious outcome. What matters here isn't photography β it's that the answer was off-screen.
